The mission

Toward a humanity
that decides better.

Every future we might build — in medicine, in technology, in how we live together — is decided by minds. So the deepest lever on the human prospect is also the oldest question in science: how does intelligence learn, and how does it decide? I have given my work to that question, and to the conviction that answering it can help people choose better.

The conviction

Understand the mind, and you gain a lever on everything it touches.

A brain is matter that learns. Understand the principles that let it do so — the same principles, I believe, that govern learning in machines and in societies — and you hold a key that turns in many locks at once: the repair of minds that are ageing or unwell, the design of artificial intelligence we can trust, and the quality of the decisions on which whole communities depend. This is not a narrow science. It is a science of the human future, pursued one rigorous question at a time.

The throughline

One line runs from physics to humanity.

Each rung is a real body of work; together they are a single argument — that the way matter learns, at the smallest scale, reaches all the way up to how we decide, at the largest.

The invitation

This is bigger than one mind.

No one understands intelligence alone. The questions here — how memory reconstructs the past, how minds and machines learn and decide — are larger than any single thesis, and I would rather pursue them in good company. If you are a researcher who shares them, an institution willing to build for the long term, or someone who believes the human future is worth this kind of patience, I would like to work with you.
